Sliding or folding doors? Choosing a balcony door
Updated October 2026The most common balcony doors are sliding doors and folding doors. Each has its strengths; the right choice depends on how wide an opening you want, how much space you have and how you use the door.
1. Sliding doors
- Space-saving: the panels slide along a track, so no swing space is needed, which suits compact Hong Kong flats.
- Opening: panels overlap, so a two-panel sliding door typically opens about half the width.
- Wide spans: LE-RELAX offers the slim 80 series up to the heavy-duty 140 series for balconies and full-height openings.
2. Folding doors
- Fully open: the panels fold to one side, opening the whole wall and joining indoors and outdoors.
- Stacking space: you need room for the folded panels.
- Operation: in the New Zealand top-hung design, the weight hangs from the top track for smoother movement.
3. How to choose
- Want to save space and open the door often: choose sliding doors.
- Want a fully open wall that joins indoors and outdoors: choose folding doors.
- High floors or windy positions: pay attention to the profile series and glass type, and talk it through with our store.
- For sound and heat insulation: both can take insulated or LOW-E glass.
